Mariner's Compass from Wendy's Quilts and More

On Monday I went to a class with visiting Australian tutor, Chris Jurd.  We spent the day making one big 18" Mariner's Compass block.


I'm really pleased with how my block turned out, especially as I made it all from stash!!  I didn't have enough of my favourite green for the background, so Chris encouraged me to alternate it with another green and it's worked out well.

Road to California 2020, Part I: The Quilt Show from Gefilte Quilt

Road to California, a terrific quilt show, took place last week, ending on Sunday. There was something for everyone - traditional, art, modern, and group quilts; challenges, guild raffle quilts, and more than a dozen wildly diverse special exhibits. Great classes. Hallway massage. Uniformed Boy Scouts who, for a small donation, watch your bags while you shop. Tons of vendors.

Also, it's next to a mellow, convenient little airport - you could walk from the Ontario, California airport to the convention center. So it's not surprising that this warm and welcoming show attracts 50,000 viewers, plus entrants and vendors ...

Heute geht es in den Oktober mit dem Skill Builder Quilt beim 6 Köpfe 12 Blöcke Quilt Along und ich darf euch den Mariners Compass vorstellen.


Etwas History

Der Block Mariners Compass ist ein sehr alter Patchwork Block und wurde vermutlich schon im 18. Jhr verwendet. Er basiert auf der Windrose / Kompassrose, die auf Segelkarten gezeichnet wurden. Diese dienten den Schifffahrern zur Navigation, bevor der Magnetkompass in die moderne Seefahrt Einzug fand. Um die Pfeile markanter zu gestalten, wurden sie mittig geteilt.
